Beauty or Beast?

Aw Well, it is Mine, All MINE!!! I am so excited to receive this sewing machine. My Aunt Patsy has had this machine sitting in her extra guest room for about 8 years or so -- I think I first saw it in 2003 - but I think she got it sometime before that. She tells me that she saw it at a garage sale, it was being used for a door stop, so she asked what the seller wanted for it. I'm sorry, but I cannot remember what she paid for it,

But knowing my Aunt, I am sure it was not more than $10...
Now My Aunt has moved to an apartment and has GIVEN the machine to me! I am so very lucky! I have been looking at it's various gears and mechanisms -- it is a very simple machine, but it does have the tension screw -- thats it at the top of the curve of the head, and it also has a bobbin winder. No where on the machine can I find a manufacturer's name though. Only the number 9484, appears on the botton of the slide opening for the shuttle.
If you know what this is I would appreciate any info you can give me -- but don't tell me to look on the singer dating site, or IMACS, I have done that already and the only new thing that I discovered is that it is probably refered to as a fiddle base sewing machine. There is a picture of a similar one at http://ismacs.net/jones/jones_fb.html but it is somewhat different. This Machine is NOT FOR SALE.
I hope in the next few days to do some sewing on it, it moves quite well, but is dusty and probably needs oil, so when I have done that, I will be satisfied that I could even make a quilt with it...

It's not a fiddle bed because ti's not the shape of a fiddle. I have a fiddle bed and it's shaped like a violin...

Check out www.ebay.co.uk and do a search for antique sewing machines. It kind of looks like the Wilcox & Gibb ones but the plate is different, I think yours might be older.... I could also be a Jones which had round plates, they were famous for their serpentine sewing machine

That's an awesome sewing machine, Susan. I'm so glad it has come into the hands of someone who appreciates it. What a crime to use it as a door stop! You should show it off at the next Quilt Show!

What a lovely treasure!

Have you checked out the Needlebar site? http://www.needlebar.org/

It has 3 parts - the main site, the forums and a picture gallery.

If you post in the forums, and there is an email address you can send photos too... they'll add it to their photo gallery, and help you identify it.
