I have been reading for quite a few months now a blog by Patsy Thompson. Her company, Patsy Thompson Designs has just released a dvd set on how to do free motion quilting along with many many free motion designs--- now we all know how cheap (well lets call it frugal) I tend to be...
Anyway, on her blog she posts photos of about 30 continuious quilting designs, that if you redraw them and practice, you don't really have to buy the dvd, well, to start off with anyway. I would suspect though to start off without the actual dvd, you will need some experience with free motion quilting, but with no experience, buy the DVD first, get the WHOLE Instruction properly seen and then tackle the designs. I think that the first 10 designs are one family, each design slightly different than the one before, then there are a couple of floral ones that would work done large as a block motif or reduced and done along borders strung together. She does explain that the ones she shows on her blog are design families. I would suggest using pen and paper to redraw some of the ideas and then practice on fabric sandwiches.
(If you use some pretty fabrics, maybe when you are done these practice pieces you can bind them and use them for placemats or hot pads in your kitchen).
I do think I will send away for this dvd, but in the meantime, I am so thankful that she has put a little taste teaser on her blog for me to play with. Go to Patsy Thompson Designs Ltd. If you are reading my blog past the end of October 08, then look for the post in her archives under October 08 on the left side of the page.

I saw that post and was very interested. I haven't tried any of them yet though.
Thank you so much! I'm a very new quilter determined to FMQ. There aren't any classes in my area and this series of DVDs just might fit the bill! I appreciate your blog pointing these out!
Her DVD's are very good. Our guild bought the first 5 she had. I personally have 2. Need to remember to add them to my Christmas wish list.
I like the idea of watching the video, and practising right along side.
I would recommend the DVDs. And if you can't afford them, ask your guild to get them. Just be sure your name is on the list to be taken out first!
thanks, will have to try this, they looks like fun...again, thanks for the info...happy quilting...Lise
