Everybody who goes grocery shopping is soon going to be using cloth reuseable bags. Plastic was a great marketing ploy and made someone alot of money, but now they are passe` and soon the cost of using plastic will be actually hitting our pocketbook. More stores (at least here in Canada) are beginning to charge for every plastic bag. Now, most groceries and some department stores like Wal-Mart have reuseable bags at a price that is less than you can make a cloth bag for.
But I for one, really dislike walking around with a bag that BLARES OUT where it comes from, so I have begun to disguise the bags and last week had this brilliant? idea to give them as 'extra' house christmas presents.
This bag, is the one that Loblaws/SuperStore in Canada sells for 99 cents. I especially like it because the store logo is not too obvious and because the body and handles of the bag are BLACK -- anything goes with black
So, by simply measuring the logo space, which is about 7 inches x 7 inches, I make a patch pocket and sew it OVER the logo on the bag, then I cut a strip, the width of the fabric (42 inches), that is about 3 inchs wide, and then cut the long strip into two at the 21 inch mark, this is the perfect length for this particular bag handles. I fold over the strip and fold in a seam allowance, and pin the strip over the existing handles and sew them on.
The whole process takes about 1/2 hour to make the bag totally personalized and no store logo announces to Safeway that you usually shop at Superstore, or that Wal-Mart stores just happens to have an item that you did not pick up at Superstore where you got the bag.
Of course if you like Wal-Mart's Blue, or Fabricland's Red or Safeway's White, go ahead and use those.

I do like the black with a bright feature fabric. All you really need for one bag is a long quarter. Cut the pocket, then you have the piece that measures about 35 inches x 9 inches, you will have to cut 2 - 3 inch x 21 inch strips from what is left, and you still have fabric left to maybe make another smaller patch pocket for the back or the side!

What a great idea Susan. My hubby would like this because he doesn't like to take the wrong bag into a rival store. I'll doctor my Superstore bags up for him to take anywhere. He will be very impressed.
If you happen to have some 'orphan' quilt blocks you can use those to cover the logo.

What a super idea. Stores in Australia are also taking this direction and charging for plastic bags. Another project to add to my never ending list.
